01The problem
Tattoo artists were running their reference libraries out of three places at once: a camera roll, a private Instagram account, and a paper sketchbook. Nothing linked a client to the references that were actually chosen, so every consultation started from scratch.
The existing tools were built for moodboarding, not for the moment where an artist has to show a client four options and get to a yes.
02Approach
We shadowed six artists across three studios for a week and mapped the real sequence: intake, reference gathering, stencil, session, healed photo. The app was then built around that sequence rather than around folders.
The core decision was to make a collection a living object with versions, so a stencil revision sits next to the reference that produced it. Everything else (search, tagging, sharing) hangs off that.
03Outcome
Shipped to a 40-studio beta before public launch. Consultation prep time dropped from roughly 25 minutes to under 10, and the version history became the feature artists cited most in interviews.
