01Context
Encore replaced a decade-old register application used across 600 stores. The old software assumed a seated cashier with a keyboard; the new floor model has staff moving through the store with a handheld.
02What changed
We rebuilt the transaction flow around one-handed reach and interruption. Every screen assumes the sale will be paused (a customer changes their mind, a manager override is needed, the device sleeps) and can be resumed from a different device without losing the cart.
The second half of the work was the component library. 140 components, documented against the physical hardware they run on, so that engineers stopped inventing register-specific one-offs.
03Outcome
Rolled out to 600 stores over four quarters. Average transaction time fell by 18 seconds and new-hire training on the register dropped from two days to a half day.
